Freshen the Air Naturally in Your RV with Essential Oils

A small essential oil diffuser will work just fine for a small RV.

How do you keep your RV smelling fresh?  I find that air fresheners just mask smells and have limited effects.  Also, the heavy perfumes can be an irritant in small spaces.  I prefer essential oils.  You can choose scents to relax, refresh and repel unwanted insects.  Today, I am sharing how I like to use essential oils both at home and in our RV.

Freshen the Air Naturally in Your RV with Essential Oils

First, start with an essential oil diffuser.  You can easily find one that comes with a starter set of oils to try and use.  Some of my favorite oils include lemon, lavender, and eucalyptus.  Lemon oil is excellent to use at the start of the day to wake up.  I also like lemon to rid the air of odors from cooking.  It is fresh and bright.  Lavender oil is perfect for unwinding at nighttime when we are getting ready for bed.  Eucalyptus works well if someone is feeling sick or congested.

The mixture of a few well-placed oils can make a pet spay or air freshener.

Essential Oil Scent Combinations

You could also use a mixture of essential oils and distilled water to make a spray air freshener or linen spray.  Start with a glass spray bottle.  Add 10 to 15 drops of essential oil of your choice to a spray bottle with 1 tablespoon of distilled grain alcohol (Everclear or vodka).  The alcohol acts as a preservative.  Swirl the alcohol and essential oil in a bottle to mix.  Fill the rest of the way with distilled water.
  • Relaxing Linen Spray or Air Freshener - use lavender oil (about 10 drops) or use equal amounts of lavender and chamomile
  • Pure and Refreshing Room Spray - 5 drops lavender, 5 drops of lemon, and 5 drops of rosemary
  • Citrus Rose Spray - 7 drops of orange and 7 drops of rose oil
  • Energizing Room Spray - 3 drops of grapefruit, 3 drops of tangerine and 3 drops of lime
  • Lemon Basil Kitchen Spray - 5 drops of lemon and 5 drops of basil
Lavender, Synergy, and Citronella are the three oils that make the pet spray we use.

Freshen Small Spaces

You can also put a few drops of essential oil on a cotton ball and place it in your wardrobes to keep everything fresh.  Place cotton balls with essential oil in your vacuum cleaner canister to leave a nice scent when you are cleaning.

Essential Oils and Pets

Finally, use essentials oils as an effective pet spray.  I keep a mixture of lavender, synergy, and citronella in our RV.  I make this with 8 drops of each in a 16-ounce bottle.  Fill with distilled water and you have a spray to use on pet bedding and your pets.  The lavender and synergy blend is calming for pets.  The synergy blend also has a nice refreshing scent.  The citronella repels ticks and fleas.  I spray this directly onto our dog's fur at the end of the day.  This blend keeps pet odors at bay but also protects them from harmful insects.

A glass bottle is what you need for an essential oil spray.

Essential oils are safe and effective ways to clean the air around you.  I can use these oils to help us to unwind and relax.  And I can customize the scents and blends to meet our family's needs.  If you are interested in essential oils, start with an essential oil diffuser that comes with oils to try out.  Or if you prefer to make some sprays, get a couple of glass bottles and 2 or 3 oils that satisfy your senses.

I use these oils both at home and at the campground.  These provide a gentle clean scent that serves an actual purpose.  Once you give some of these oils a try, I think you will really enjoy the effects in your personal space.

Until next time...
