What You Really Need in a Camper: Why Less Is More
After spending 16 nights on the road this fall, I came home with one big realization — sometimes, less really is more when it comes to camper life.
When we first started RVing, I wanted to have every gadget and tool that promised to make camping easier. Over time though, I’ve learned that all those “conveniences” can start to feel like clutter. And in a small space, clutter equals chaos. These days, I’m focusing on scaling back to the essentials — choosing items that truly make life on the road better and letting go of the rest.

What You Really Need
When it comes down to it, you don’t need much to camp comfortably. You need gear that works well, stores easily, and serves more than one purpose. The basics — a good set of cookware, a reliable water hose and filter, bedding you love, and a solid outdoor rug — are more than enough to make your camper feel like home.
Glamper Tip: The fewer things you have to trip over or dig through, the more peaceful and enjoyable your time at the campsite becomes.

Gadgets You Can Live Without
I’ll be honest — I used to be a “just in case” camper. If I thought I might need something, I packed it. But after years of experience, I’ve realized that most of those “just in case” gadgets rarely get used.
One big change I made recently? I got rid of our bulky vacuum cleaner and went back to a simple broom and dustpan. It does the job just as well, takes up less space, and doesn’t need charging.
It’s little swaps like that that make a huge difference. Fewer cords. Fewer batteries. Less stuff to store and clean around.

Small Upgrades That Make a Big Difference
Cutting down on clutter doesn’t mean you can’t make smart improvements. In fact, a few small upgrades have made our RV more functional than ever:
- Hat storage: We added a few simple hooks to the wall near the door. It keeps our hats handy and off the counters.
- Magnetic remote holders: No more hunting for remotes — these stick right to the wall where we can always find them.
- Phone holders by the bed: Everyone has a designated spot to charge and store their phone now, and it keeps nightstands clear.
- Hooks for organization: I use hooks to hold dog leashes, small tote bags that are functional, jackets, and more. This keeps things off the floor and in a place where we can easily find them.
Organization Hack: Getting things up and off the floor instantly makes a small space feel bigger and cleaner.

Why It Matters
A clutter-free camper isn’t just easier to clean — it’s easier to enjoy. When everything has a place and only the essentials make the trip, our family travels smoother, stays happier, and can focus on what really matters: the memories we’re making.
Keeping things simple also makes it easier to travel farther and stay out longer. When your RV is organized and efficient, it’s easier to say “yes” to the next adventure — without the stress of packing, cleaning, or feeling crowded.
So, as we plan our next trip, I’m reminding myself: every item we bring should serve a purpose, make life easier, or bring us joy. Everything else can stay home.
Final Thought: Sometimes, the best thing you can pack is a little extra space to breathe.
