Campground Review: Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground

We had a pull through site at Mama Gertie's.  It was plenty of room for us!

Asheville, North Carolina is a coveted tourist destination.  With an eclectic blend of restaurants, breweries, wineries, and outdoor activities, there is something for every traveler!  We have visited Asheville multiple times.  However, this was our first time to bring our RV, and it was worth the effort to make this a camping excursion for our family!
Our site was just right for us and our dogs.

Campground Review:  Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground

RV travel appeals to our family on many levels.  I keep our RV stocked with all of our essentials to keep things simple.  We just pack our clothes and food and go.  Taking our pets is a huge bonus.  We travel less and less in hotels for our personal travel and almost exclusively travel in our RV.  It fits with our lifestyle, and once you make that leap it is hard to go back to anything else.

There are quite a few campgrounds in the Asheville area.  If you are planning an RV trip here, you should consider Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground.  Located in Swannanoa, North Carolina, this dreamy campground is just a short drive to all of the surrounding attractions.  We scouted out all of the local campgrounds to that area in the spring of 2020 and loved this one the best!

I loved spending time by our fire pit and relaxing at the end of the day.

Mama Gertie's offers two different camping areas that are both beautiful and serene.  The lower level of camp sites are smaller sites in wooded canopy that is very relaxing.  They offer both pull through and back in sites.

The top camping sites are lookout sites that offer majestic views of the mountains.  However, the lookout sites are only open during certain times of the year.  When we camped there in March, the lookout sites were not yet open.  These sites are typically open April through September.  The wind and weather prevents year around camping at the top level.  So, if you have your heart set on one of these sites, plan your trip accordingly.

The look out sites at the top of the campground are spectacular.  There are several options for decks and other great amenities.

We would like to return and grab a lookout site at Mama Gertie's!

Some of the lookout sites have private decks with swings.  How fun is that?

One thing that sets Mama Gertie's apart from other campgrounds is the customer service.  We were scheduled to arrive on a day where the weather was going to be uncertain.  Weather predictions were indicating ice, snow and windy weather on our arrival date.  The staff at Mama Gertie's was watching the weather just as we were.  They called us several days ahead to advise us about the possibility of black ice on the roads up the campground.  Due to the weather, they would allow us to cancel our reservation for that night without penalty.  They were patient and kind to work with as we watched the weather from Mississippi ahead of our trip and tried to help us make an informed decision.

We took advantage of all of the extra space and played frisbee at an adjacent site while we were there.

Mama Gertie's is located just a short drive off of the main interstate.  However, there is a small stretch of steep narrow road just before turning into the campground.  The roads in the campground are also somewhat steep.  It is by no means treacherous, but it is worth considering when it comes to potentially bad weather.

On the day of our arrival, they gave us very specific instructions for check in.  We stopped at the camp store.  A staff member guided us up to our spot and helped us ensure that our camper was well placed and level before leaving us.  They also let us know that because of freezing temperatures that it would be wise to fill up our freshwater tank the night before to ensure that we would have water.  Why had we never thought of this before?  And, why don't other campgrounds tell campers this?  We have fought with freezing temps on multiple trips over the past two years.  And, this sudden epiphany made me feel like a bit of a moron for not figuring this out prior to now!  However, again, this all goes back to customer service and Mama Gertie's gives that.  They really made our stay great.

At the campground, there is a well stocked camp store.  They also offer propane fill up as well as fire wood.  They deliver everything to your campsite and are the nicest hosts ever.  I cannot say enough great things about them.

If you are looking for a beautiful spot to camp that is still small and offers all of the amenities that you need, Mama Gertie's Hide Away Campground is for you.  We paid a little more for the spot, but it was worth every penny, and I would gladly return.  I feel like a summer time visit with a lookout site is on the horizon for us.  I'm sure these book up quickly, so plan your trip well in advance.

While we are here this time, we enjoyed some great food and fun activities that included:
